At Base Hospital - Our Story

"We were only six Nurses, a DMO and had only four buildings"

Mrs. Senathilaka (Acting Matron, 1976)

Base Hospital Puttalam can boast an illustrious history of over 70 years, which started as a District Government hospital offering medical care facilities for the people of Puttalam. As a hospital it started from humble beginning serving well over a widespread community within the radius of Wanathavilluwa, Kalppitiya, Nawagaththegama, Mahakumbukkaduwela and Anamaduwa.

History of Puttalam dates back to the arrival of Prince Vijaya, "The Vijayagamanaya" nearly 25 centuries ago. The land which his ships washed ashore called Thambapanni, the land with bronze soil. Situated 80 miles north from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Puttalam is a small but very populous town.

Famous for salt and fishing, Puttalam is the home to one of Sri Lanka’s largest lagoons, also called Puttalam lagoon. Currently Puttalam is the second largest Coconut producer in the country, and the heart of salt production of Sri Lanka.

We take pride in to be one of the very few hospitals with such multicultural values, supporting all faiths of all religions.
